Daredevil Faux Casting

A Daredevil reboot has been rumored for a while so I thought I’d take a crack at casting the film. I didn’t have time to go through the entire cast of possible characters such as Stick, Lady Bullseye, Mr. Fear, etc. but I’ve rounded up the most popular characters. As usual, I chose actors based on looks, acting ability and age in relation to each other.

Michael C. Hall as Daredevil/Matt Murdock – The blind lawyer full of contradictions, Matt Murdock has many layers and must be played by someone who can portray a moral man who commits crimes and has an edge of darkness. Michael C. Hall is that guy.

Stana Katic as Elektra Natchios – Elektra and Matt meet during their time at Columbia University. She later becomes an assassin whose weapon of choice is a pair of sai. Although she’s killed, she, like many comic book characters who die, is brought back. Katic isn’t Greek but she has enough of an ethnic ambiguity that she could pass and she has martial arts training.

Patton Oswalt as Foggy Nelson – Matt’s best friend and law partner, Foggy is both comic relief and base of support. He’s had plenty of his own hijinks in the comics but remains a pretty easy-going guy. Oswalt’s experience as a comedian and actor would serve him well in the role.

Alicia Witt as Typhoid Mary – Typhoid Mary is one of my favorite Daredevil characters. She is well and truly crazy and a past flame of Daredevil’s. I chose Alicia Witt because I think she can handle each of the professional criminal’s personalities in a believable way.

Tim Roth as Ben Urich – Investigative journalist for The Daily Bugle, Ben Urich figured out Daredevil’s sercret identity on his own but keeps the information to himself. He does, however, use it to advance his career by using Daredevil as a source. Roth is a great actor and could handle the role, easy. Roth seems to have stepped from the pages; he looks so similar to the character.

Yvonne Strahovski as Karen Page – Karen is Matt Murdock’s secretary who eventually learns Daredevil’s secret identity. They have a rocky romance and she is one of Daredevil’s great loves but she is ultimately killed by Bullseye. Playing Karen would be a change for Strahovski who is former CIA agent Sarah Bartowski on Chuck; it would be nice to see her range as an actress.

Timothy Olyphant as Bullseye – Bullseye is a mysterious character with a vendetta against Daredevil. He’s agile and can use nearly any object as a weapon. He doesn’t have superpowers but he’s deadly (he killed Elektra). Olyphant has the look of a villain which casting directors seem to agree with, as evidenced by some of his past roles. I think he and Michael C. Hall would be great nemesis. (If Michael Fassbender hadn’t already impressed as Magneto in First Class I would have chosen him for Bullseye)

Kingpin – This is such a difficult role to cast for because of the physical appearance. I could go for a wrestler who is physically imposing but I’m not sure they could pull of Kingpin’s complexity. Or I could go with a too-small actor but no one would buy it. What are your thoughts? I almost want to stick with Michael Clarke Duncan.

  1. Oswald is the PERFECT choice for Foggy. As for Kingpin, I think John Goodman would be pretty cool. Good chance to show he´s more than a comedic actor.

    • Thanks! Love the idea of Goodman as Kingpin!

  2. As cool as it would be to see MCH play the role, I just can’t see him doing the action stuff.

And I will defend the Ben Affleck version till I’m out of breath, because I love that film, the Directors Cut is amazing.

    • I also liked the DD film.

    • I haven’t seen the Directors Cut and yet I still enjoyed the Ben Affleck version. I recently just re-watched it too! I do like Jennifer’s picks though.

  3. Great casting recommendations all the way around. As I scrolled down through the article my smile just grew bigger and bigger. Excellent choices!!! – @CSSully on Twitter

  4. Not bad! Put some good writing behind it, and I’d go see it.

    • If I thought anyone would take a serious look at it, I’d write a script too. :) Daredevil is a great character. Thanks for commenting, Lance.

  5. Alicia Witt… niiiiiice lol I’m impressed. I like your choice for Elektra too!

  6. First of all i love Daredevil, i love people who are prepared to talk Daredevil and so naturally i love this list, i agree with all of the choices as most resemble their comic counter-parts. Kingpin is a toughie though, in every Daredevil comic that i’ve read that featured Kingpin he’s pretty much dominated every panel he’s appeared in so a smaller actor for me wouldn’t do justice to the character. It’d have to be a big guy, maybe UFC fighter Brock Lesnar, ex-wrestler Bill Goldberg or current WWE Wrestlers Paul “Big Show” Wight or Glenn “Kane” Jacobs, check them out on Wikipedia if you dont know what they look like. However none have much acting experience, so a possible alternative could be Game of Thrones Mark Addy.

No-ones mentioned Turk yet so i’d cast Chris Rock in the role for some comic relief, especially if the film was as dark and gritty as Bendis’s & Brubaker’s comic run.

I’d love to see The Owl and The Enforcers as possible alternatives to The Kingpin and Bullseye.

    • Having The Owl in there would def be cool. The problem with casting for Kingpin is you need someone who is a good actor -and- has the physical appearance and there aren’t many actors who meet both requirements.

  7. I had to share this on my Twitter! I want to see this movie made! What do you think of James Gandolfini for Kingpin? He’s not as big as Fisk but I think they could make a convincing fat suit for it.

    • He seems to be a popular choice just judging from the Twitter responses I received. I like Gandolfini but not sure about him as Kingpin.

  8. I TOTALLY agree with Michael C Hall playing Daredevil and Stana Katic playing Elektra, I actually considered them before seeing this so great choices!
All the castings seem good, except I would be interested to see Yvonne Strahovski play Typhoid Mary instead, see her play the badass villan.
And for kingpin, Michael Clark Duncans works or anyboy who can put on a suit to alter their appearance

    • I think a fat suit would be the best way to go because that’s one thing from the comics I always remember – how physically imposing Kingpin is.

  9. @ Jennifer Good Choices! I’ve been debating this for a while now of who to play Matt Murdock if they rebooted. although he’s a bit on the old side, I thought Iain Glen from game of thrones would be a good fit. however, The guy you picked kinda has more of that “matt murdock-esque” look. If I had to reboot, why not start with the fixer? I mean its a decent story, not too off the wall villian wise. Maybe introduce purple man? lol. yeah old school villianry. Good pick for Karen Page by the way. spot on!
